Wow Your Valentine with Gifts in Their Love Language

A Few Words on Love and Retail

You might be surprised to learn that much of my work as a Personal Style Assistant with Primarché has a lot to do with love, even when Valentine’s Day isn’t on the horizon.

Day after day, shoppers come to me looking to capture and express what they feel for the people in their lives in a tangible way. For me, this is one of the greatest privileges of my work. Where else can I get the chance to help a mother celebrate her daughter’s promotion with an on trend laptop bag that says “I know you’ve got this - I’m so proud of you,” or assist newlyweds in styling a home that speaks to all they have in common, or find a bracelet that lets a person’s sweetheart know “after all these years, you’re still the one.” The human desire to connect to others through gifting reveals one of the fashion world’s best kept secrets: retail is rooted in love. So how does a personal style assistant help shoppers find gifts that speak straight to the heart every time? Easy! I guide my clients to give gifts by love language.

How We Communicate Love: The Five Love Languages

The five love languages are based on the simple but profound observation that we all give and receive love in different ways - through acts of service, words of affirmation, receiving gifts, quality time, or physical touch. Relationship experts agree that communicating love in your partner’s preferred love language is key for building and maintaining strong relationships. Usually, you can determine a person’s love language by observing their habits. If they love giving hugs and back scratches, then physical touch is their likely love language. Do they save keepsakes like ticket stubs from movies you saw together or tend to surprise you with small tokens of affection? Your partner’s love language is receiving gifts. Of course, if you want to be absolutely sure of your loved one’s love language, you can both take the love language test. Naturally, this wisdom can and should be applied when you’re shopping for anyone you love.

Acts of Service

This love language is all about making your loved one’s life a bit easier. This can be as simple as opening an umbrella for them in the rain or reminding them to file their taxes on time. If your partner gravitates to acts of service, I suggest drawing them a relaxing bath with therapeutic bath salts from Nava.

Receiving Gifts

You’d be wrong to think that people whose love language is receiving gifts are materialistic types. In reality, this group feels love best when their individuality is celebrated in small trinkets that demonstrate that you’ve taken note of them. Select gifts by centering on things they feel represent them as a person. Buy designs in their favorite hues or shout out their eclectic tastes with funky and fun pieces like this cat tote from Xiomi.

Words of Affirmation

For these loquacious lovers, it’s not what you do, but what you say! Just kidding, they care about what you do too. And, what you should do to thrill your language-driven romantic, is to get them a gift that quite literally spells out how much they mean to you. Try these flirty message bath mats from MAN+WOMAN.

Quality Time

Turn off all screens and put your phone on silent. Partners whose primary love language is quality time equate love to having your full and undivided attention. These in-the-moment lovers will be happiest to receive gifts that relate to your world together. For example, if you are avid travelers, a practical buy like functional and sleek luggage by Foursight will strike quality timers as a particularly romantic gift.

Physical Touch

Gifts that center around sensations and delight the senses are excellent choices for partners whose love language is physical touch. Buys that can bring you two into closer proximity are especially ideal. Show your tactile companion your love by cuddling up on the couch with them under this dreamy crochet throw by MAN+WOMAN.
